Weight Loss Program: Chair Exercise

A successful weight loss program considers your lifestyle and what we need to do to increase our physical activity everyday. A good chair exercise that you can do anywhere can help. One of the reasons we are overweight as a nation is that we moved from a society that works with our hands to one that works with our minds. We are not working in the fields or even the factory. Most of us are sitting behind a desk for the majority of the day and we lead a sedentary lifestyle. We do not move. We do not walk, lift, twist or turn. We just sit behind the desk or on the couch without much movement. Studies have shown that even if you work out everyday for 30 minutes your mortality is less because you sit most of the day. Yes even if you work out everyday. The key is movement. This is part of the regular physical exercise in your weight loss program. Even a simple chair stretching exercise will be emensly helpful.

I remember when I was in the Air Force going through training, I had a career field that the actual class room training was nine months long. We were in class eight hours a day for nine months. School was our job. There was no missing class or coming in late or leaving early as you felt like it. Class eight hours a day, actually nine hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We made our beds, cleaned our areas and had morning formation and roll call, went to breakfast and was at class all before 8:00 a.m. every morning. The U.S. Air Force knew we needed to move throughout the day. We could not just sit there for eight or nine hours. So we had many breaks. We had 50 minutes of class and at least a 10 minute break. We were ordered to get up and leave our room unless we needed to talk to the instructor, but they also needed breaks. This forced us to move, clear our minds and be refreshed for the next 50 minute class. Six 10 minute breaks and lunch in a 9 hour day. They had something there. You should consider the same thing. Get up for 10 minutes and stretch your legs every hour if you can. Stretch your entire body. Go for a walk around the office or even outside if you can. If you are at home you do not need to be sitting in a chair all day. Break away from the television and or the computer. The more active you are the better your health, the sharper your mind and the easier it is for you to lose weight and keep it off. This is important for your weight loss program.

Below is an 8 minute chair exercise video. This is a series of stretches that are helpful to keep your blood flowing. Do this everyday. This is not a replacement for your regular physical exercise program. This is just a simple stretch program that we all need especially if we sit in a chair all day. Add this to your regular exercise plan as part of your weight loss program. You will be grateful that you did.
