My Weight Loss Journey

Summer 2007

Summer 2007

I started this blog almost 5 months ago because I needed to tell a story as I was compelled to live healthy and lose weight. I have written over 60 articles to date and really have not journaled my life experiences. Sure I have shared some experiences and most of what I have learned but I feel it is best that I do this in the context of what I am going through so I can truly share my personal testimony.

I have been a closet athlete all my life. I was a very active kid, playing whatever kind of ball there was in the streets at the park and around my neighborhood. When I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s there were organized sports but the neighborhood activities ruled. I did not have to be on an organized baseball, basketball or football team to learn the game and play it well and often. In fact many of the best players were not into organized sports. Unfortunately, I was not one of the best players. But, I loved sports and I was very active.

In High School I played on the freshman football team, ran track, ran cross country and played baseball. But, I was a wrestler. I wrestled for 3 years and was the captain of the team my senior year.

Wrestling was an interesting sport because out of all the team sports it required that you are in the best physical condition. Not only was your physical conditioning very important but almost as important was your weight management. So as a scrawny little kid of only 119 pounds entering school, I was constantly on a diet throughout high school. My sophomore year I wrestled 119 pound category and 126 lb category for my junior year. As a senior I moved up to 132 lbs which was a struggle because I weighed 145 but those guys were much stronger than me.

This is all important because I learned at an early age, the key to weight loss and weight management is to eat a healthy diet and to exercise regularly.

I am like most people, as we go through life we put on weight and stop exercising. When I started writing in this blog I was 50 years old and 207 lbs. A long way from my high school weight. When I checked a Body Mass Index Calculator I was borderline obese with a BMI of 30.6. I used to be stronger and faster than my kids. Now I can not keep up with my grandchildren. I sometimes got tired just walking around the mall with my wife. I was just in poor shape not unlike many people my age.

But this is not my original motivation to write and share. The fact that I was out of shape, with a gut that the whole family would joke about, and in just poor health did not motivate me directly. My motivation came as a part of the economic down turn and I lost my job. Then my father informed the family he had terminal cancer. Additionally, as a Deacon at my church I was aware of many people battling and even losing the fight to cancer. I saw my mortality in front of my eyes and the mid life crises slapped me in the face.

Then I began to research cancer and found that there is no cure but cancer is preventable. Yes that is right. There are many studies the show a healthy diet and regular exercise dramatically reduces the risks of anyone, “anyone” getting cancer. Some cancers sometimes go into remission due to proper diet and regular exercise. Sure if you are in a high risk group you are in a high risk group. But, your risks can be reduced dramatically. These significant factors that put many people at a high risk for cancer, heart disease, diabetes and many other fatal or debilitating diseases. They are:

  1. Heredity
  2. Being Overweight
  3. Poor Diet
  4. Lack of Exercise
  5. Environment
  1. Heredity you can not change. Your risks are your risks based on heredity.
  2. I can lose weight.
  3. I can change my diet
  4. I can exercise regularly.
  5. Your environment is the air you breathe and the water you drink. I can change that also.

So I was losing on all these  major factors. My father had cancer, I was borderline obese and I ate an unhealthy diet and did not exercise regularly. I spent very little time outside so I did not get fresh air. There are also no live plants in my home to help add oxygen to the air we breathe.  Now I had to choose how I was going to live and if I was going to live. These are all life and death decisions I had to make about my life. As a middle aged baby boomer I have no time to put these changes off. Cancer is preventable. Cancer is not curable. Which seat did I want to sit in. Do I want to fight to reduce my risks of ever getting a major disease or did I want to fight with the diseases?

This is a simple choice for me. Not an easy road. But given the option it is a simple choice. Hence we have

Not that I’m totally impressed, but this is a lot more than I expected for when I stumpled upon a link on Digg telling that the info here is quite decent. Thanks.
